Heat-Shrink Splice Protectors Heat-shrinkable splice protection continues to be the most popular method to protect fusion splices. The sleeve securely protects the fusion splice on either 250 or 900 m coated fibers, while offering individual access to each fusion splice. To use, slide the heat-shrink sleeve over the fiber and then make the splice. Reposition the heat-shrink sleeve directly over the splice and place it in the heat-shrink oven. After the specified heating time (depending on sleeve type), the splice is secure and ready to be transferred to the splice tray. Corning Cable Systems heat-shrink sleeves are compatible with most splice trays offered and are compatible with all heat-shrink ovens offered with Corning Cable Systems fusion splicers. Corning Cable Systems offers both single-fiber and multifiber heatshrink sleeves. Provides durable protection for spliced fibers Sleeves are heat-bonded, keeping the sleeves aligned with the strength member during shipping, installation and shrinking. Available in 40mm and 60mm lengths The sleeves are comprised of three components: An inner tube of Polyolefin Copolymer adhesive that bonds to the fiber coating when heated, providing strength, and preventing air and moisture from making contact with the splice. An outer sleeve of Polyolefin heatshrink that reduces in size when heat is applied and places pressure on the inner sleeve to ensure an air and watertight joint. The outer sleeve also holds the sleeve components together. A stainless steel pin to provide rigidity, and prevent the fiber bending and/or breaking. This pin is located between the inner tube of adhesive and an outer heat-shrink sleeve. The properties of the inner tube and the outer tube are designed such that the inner tube starts to melt at a lower temperature than that at which the outer tube shrinks. This is to prevent force being applied to the fiber splice and to ensure proper encapsulation.
